What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants-explained-so-simply-a-toddler-could-understand

Have you ever wondered, “What are antioxidants”? I know I have! They are advertised everywhere and you know they are good but WHAT are they? Are they a vitamin? No. Are they a mineral? No.
Okay, so if they are not a vitamin nor a mineral then how could they possibly benefit the body? Let me tell you a little story to help you understand what an antioxidant really is and what its place is in the body is.

There was this happily married couple. We’ll call them Mark and Erica. (… okay, so that’s my husband and I, lol) Every night they would go to sleep so comfortable in their queen sized bed with the pillow-top mattress and memory foam pillows. One day they decided to have a baby. Eventually that baby became a toddler that no longer wanted to sleep in her own bed. No matter what Erica and Mark did that toddler always seemed to make it into the cozy comfy bed (Which, by the way, was no longer cozy and comfy) Every night Erica and Mark would be head butted, kicked, punched, and pushed from their perfectly comfortable sleeping positions. It was not ideal for anyone!

One day while out at the store, Erica found this cute Princess Sophia bed set. That day, Erica and Mark upgraded the little toddlers bed to a “Big girl bed” with princess Sophia sheets, pillows and blankets. That was just what the toddler needed! She was in love with her new bedding and wanted to go to sleep right away. Each night thereafter, she laid down in her own bed and slept there all night until the morning woke her.

The End.

So, Do you understand antioxidants after reading that cute little story? No? Okay, so here is the explanation:
Erica and Mark had a healthy cell structure, much like the ones found in your body. They slept comfortably in there bed and it was good and healthy. Along came this free radical, a toddler, who ruined sleep for that healthy cell structure. Then the Antioxidant, Princess Sophia bed set, saved the day (or night)

When your body has free radicals inside of it, the antioxidants attach to those free radicals and save the day. Those free radicals are no longer a threat to your healthy cell structures. Overall this means, without free radicals, you will feel 100%!

When we talk about food items sometimes we say “That’s High in antioxidants” To know which foods are high we rate them using ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) units. This unit of measurement for antioxidants was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

For further reading you can check out what the National Institute of health has to say about Antioxidants here.

So which foods have high antioxidant ratings? I have put together a graphic for you to show some common foods. You can also search Super Foodly for additional foods.

But wait! Did you know that essential oils have antioxidant ratings as well? They do and they are surprisingly high!

Essential Oils for Teachers

Essential Oils For Teachers

It’s back to school Monday! The weekend has passed and the kids are all back in class. In this post you will find some essential oils for teachers.

Teachers become teachers because they want to make a difference in our upcoming generations. (At least, that’s my perception of the job) Lets face it! Being a teacher can come with a lot more then dealing with lesson plans, activities and grades. Every teacher faces their day to day frustrations, irritations, and challenges. I have put together a collection of oils and products that I feel are must-haves in your big teacher desk! In addition to my Back To School Essentials post, I’ve elaborated and added a few more! Enjoy!

Joy –  Diffuse in class (if your permitted) or before class to enjoy a drama free classroom. You can also wear this as a perfume to help you stay positive throughout your day.

Purification – I know you’ve got one – A stinky kid! If you don’t, then I know you’ve got some stinky gym shoes, a stinky locker, or if your really lucky, a stinky surprise food item left for months in a desk!  Put a few drops on a cotton ball to help freshen the air. You can place the cotton ball wherever its needed.

Stress Away – Teaching can be stressful! Use Stress Away to reduce any teaching related stress.

Peppermint – Need to keep your mind sharp? Use this fresh scent to open your eyes and get your brain working. You can add a drop to a glass of water and drink throughout the day. This will also help support digestion, as well.

Thieves – We all know kids are walking cesspools! Keep an extra bottle of this on hand just in case. Okay, maybe that’s a bit too excessive but one drop in your morning tea will help support your healthy immune system. Also, Thieves is available as wipes, spray and hand purifier! Get some!

Aroma Life – If you get nervous before presenting information to your colleagues or at a board meeting, apply some of this oil over your heart. Doing this will energize your life force helping you to “Come out of your shell”

Lavender – Everyone loves sleep. Teachers need restful sleep so they can teach our children. If you love your teacher, buy her a bottle of lavender. If your the teacher, you will want this oil in your collection! one drop on a cotton ball placed between your pillow and case is all you need. You can make a room spray or a linen spray. You may even diffuse for a restful night.

Lemon – If you need some extra eye opening in the A.M. Try a drop of lemon in your glass of water. Remember, use glass; not plastic!

Frankincense – If you find yourself in a bad mood use a drop of frankincense. It is considered a holy oil and was given to Jesus as a gift. This oil will help bring you closer to go and in turn enhance your mood. If you need some spirit in your life, this is a must have!

Valor – This oil is especially useful to high school teachers. You have to have confidence in yourself otherwise your students will walk all over you. You don’t want to be the “Cool” teacher because you are a total pushover. If you need some extra confidence anywhere in your life this is your oil! I enjoy placing one drop in my cupped hand and directly inhaling. This oil smells amazing and I truly believe it helps restore confidence.

That concludes the oils found in my previous post. Don’t leave just yet! Here are a few other great products you may want to try!

Copaiba Essential Oil

copaiba Copaiba is pronounced, “Ko-pah-ee-bah”. I bet a lot of you have never heard of this oil before!!!
This is a good oil to always have on hand!
Copaiba is a powerful essential oil from South America that has traditionally been used to aid digestion and support the body’s natural response to injury or irritation. My favorite part about this oil is it can help save you money on your more expensive oils! Any time you use copaiba essential oil with another oil, it will magnify the properties of that oil. Copaiba is a key ingredient in Young Living’s Deep Relief Roll-On.
Copaiba trees have tall trunks and branch out only at the top. They secrete a sticky, viscous liquid ( called oleoresin ) – Think maple syrup. This transparent resin is then used to extract Copaiba essential oil using steam distillation process. Copaiba contains the highest amounts of beta caryophyllene (55 percent) of any known essential oil. Beta caryophyllene has been extensively studied. Copaiba also contains alpha-humulene (HINT: google these 2 constituents) These are amazing and helpful properties.

Wanny try copaiba essential oil? Get the Premium Starter Kit! Now, this wonderful oil is included in the kit!
