Have you ever wondered, “What are antioxidants”? I know I have! They are advertised everywhere and you know they are good but WHAT are they? Are they a vitamin? No. Are they a mineral? No.
Okay, so if they are not a vitamin nor a mineral then how could they possibly benefit the body? Let me tell you a little story to help you understand what an antioxidant really is and what its place is in the body is.
There was this happily married couple. We’ll call them Mark and Erica. (… okay, so that’s my husband and I, lol) Every night they would go to sleep so comfortable in their queen sized bed with the pillow-top mattress and memory foam pillows. One day they decided to have a baby. Eventually that baby became a toddler that no longer wanted to sleep in her own bed. No matter what Erica and Mark did that toddler always seemed to make it into the cozy comfy bed (Which, by the way, was no longer cozy and comfy) Every night Erica and Mark would be head butted, kicked, punched, and pushed from their perfectly comfortable sleeping positions. It was not ideal for anyone!
One day while out at the store, Erica found this cute Princess Sophia bed set. That day, Erica and Mark upgraded the little toddlers bed to a “Big girl bed” with princess Sophia sheets, pillows and blankets. That was just what the toddler needed! She was in love with her new bedding and wanted to go to sleep right away. Each night thereafter, she laid down in her own bed and slept there all night until the morning woke her.
So, Do you understand antioxidants after reading that cute little story? No? Okay, so here is the explanation:
Erica and Mark had a healthy cell structure, much like the ones found in your body. They slept comfortably in there bed and it was good and healthy. Along came this free radical, a toddler, who ruined sleep for that healthy cell structure. Then the Antioxidant, Princess Sophia bed set, saved the day (or night)
When your body has free radicals inside of it, the antioxidants attach to those free radicals and save the day. Those free radicals are no longer a threat to your healthy cell structures. Overall this means, without free radicals, you will feel 100%!
When we talk about food items sometimes we say “That’s High in antioxidants” To know which foods are high we rate them using ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) units. This unit of measurement for antioxidants was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
